Julia and Gail Ayres workshop descriptions
These are designed for full day classes. Each subject may be developed into an in depth three day workshop. The teaching includes short demonstrations by the instructors. The subjects may be altered to accommodate the interests of the students.
We use studio friendly non toxic printmaking materials including Akua Kolor water based inks and the Galeforcegraphics PinPress.

1. Monotype The Painterly Print
Experience the magic of printing our own paintings.
Participants learn the art of painting and printing monotypes. Both reductive and subtractive methods are used.

In this class we also develop the ghost image left on the plate to bring depth and texture to succeeding monotype prints.

2. Block Printing With New Materials

Explore the time honored tradition of relief printmaking using new materials and techniques. Participants create their own blocks and then print them with non toxic water base inks. We use materials that cut easily and print well. They are described in Ayres' article in American Artist Magazine, October 2005.

We made a basic black and white printed block as well as a reductive three color print.

3. Color Layering with Monotypes
Students start by using basic monotype printing techniques. They then expand creative possibilities of making monotypes by using several methods of layering color with multiple plate drops. See how these techniques and colors interplay to produce varied effects in your final image. In this class we print the ghost image of each monotype. We learn how to print additional color on top of these prints. We also learn to use transparent colors to enliven imagery.

4. Make and Print Collagraph Plates
Learn to creatively construct and ink plates to produce these innovative prints. We show how to cut, paint, tear and collage on the printing plate to achieve numerous textural effects. The plates are then printed with either intaglio or relief techniques. Some plates will print both ways.

5. Intaglio Printmaking With or Without a Press

Julia's Wright Glider Series
Here you will learn to etch a drypoint plate with a simple needle tool, then print your plate with water-based inks and the monotype Pin Press.

Or learn the art of intaglio printmaking  with ImagOn photo emulsion film.  Spit bite technique is an excellent introduction to this contemporary way of working.

Next, open the realm of color by adding monotype techniques to your plate before printing.

5. Intaglio Printmaking Without a Press

Gail's Chine Colle' on multi plate
Make your own color fast collage papers and apply them during the printing process.
Learn several ways to use stencils to develop imagery are investigated.
